Born in Birmingham, she trained as a nurse before studying at the Manchester Polytechnic School of Theatre and working at the Liverpool Everyman Theatre. The role of the indomitable, working-class hairdresser in Educating Rita (1980) established her reputation and she received an Academy Award nomination and a BAFTA Best Actress award when she repeated it in the 1983 film version. A skilled mimic, comedienne and versatile character actress, she has appeared on stage in Macbeth (1985), The Rose Tattoo (1991) and All My Sons (2001, Olivier award). On television, she has performed comedy with Victoria Wood in series such as Wood and Walters (1981-82), and drama in the Alan Bleasdale-scripted series Boys from the Blackstuff (1982), G.B.H. (1991) and Jake's Progress (1995). Her films include Personal Services (1986), Stepping Out (1991), Billy Elliot (2000, Best Supporting Actress BAFTA award), Calendar Girls (2003), Mamma Mia! (2008) and a recurring role as Mrs Weasley in the Harry Potter series (2001- ). She is also the author of Babytalk (1990), a frank and funny account of motherhood. She was awarded an OBE in 1999.
