English actor. She has worked in cinema, theatre, and television, ranging from song-and-dance to Shakespeare, often playing variations on the independent woman. She won an Academy Awards for her performances in adaptations of E M Forster's Howards End (1992) and Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, in which she also played the role of Elinor.
Thompson was married to the actor and director Kenneth Branagh 1989–95, and appeared in his films, including the role of Katharine in Henry V (1989), a dual role in Dead Again (1991), and as Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing (1993). The same year she starred in the film version of The Remains of the Day and had a supporting role in the IRA drama In the Name of the Father, receiving Academy Award nominations for both. She appeared as Professor Trelawny in the Harry Potter series 2004–10.
Other films include Alan Rickman's British film The Winter Guest (1997), the US comedy Primary Colors (1998), the British romantic comedy Love Actually (2003), and the British coming-of-age film An Education (2009).
