US soul ballad singer. A pop sensation during the 1980s and 90s, she had a string of consecutive number-one hits in the USA and the UK. They include ‘Saving All My Love for You’ (1985), ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)’ (1987), ‘Where Do Broken Hearts Go’ (1988), ‘I Will Always Love You’ (1992), and ‘When You Believe’ (1998; with Mariah Carey). Her bestselling albums include Whitney Houston (1985), Whitney (1987), I'm Your Baby Tonight (1990), and My Love Is Your Love (1998).
Houston made her acting debut in the film The Bodyguard (1992). Though she received poor reviews for her acting, four songs recorded by her were taken from the phenomenally successful soundtrack album – cover versions of Dolly Parton's ‘I Will Always Love You’, which topped the US chart for 14 weeks and the UK charts for nine; Chaka Khan's ‘I'm Every Woman’, as well as ‘I Have Nothing’ and ‘Run To You’. She went on to appear in the films Waiting to Exhale (1995) and The Preacher's Wife (1996). Later albums include Just Whitneywill (2002), One Wish: The Holiday Album (2003), and I Look to You (2009).
Born to a musical family in Newark, New Jersey, Houston was a cousin of Dionne Warwick and goddaughter of Aretha Franklin. She was married to singer Bobby Brown 1992–2007, and this abusive marriage, as well as drug addiction, led to a decline in her career during the 1990s and 2000s.
