Born in London, the daughter of the 7th Earl of Longford, she was educated at St Mary's Convent, Ascot, and Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford. She has written many historical biographies, including Mary Queen of Scots (1969, James Tait Black Memorial Prize), Cromwell Our Chief of Men (1973), King James VI and I (1974), King Charles II (1979), Kings and Queens of England (1975, reissued 1988), The Six Wives of Henry VIII (1992), Marie Antoinette (2001) and Love and Louis XIV (2006). The Weaker Vessel (1983) focuses on women in the 17th century. She has also written mystery stories, including Quiet as a Nun (1977), Have a Nice Death (1983) and Political Death (1994), which feature the detective Jemima Shore. She was married to politician Hugh Fraser from 1956-77, and married Harold Pinter in 1980. Her book Must You Go? My Life with Harold Pinter (2010) is an affectionate memoir of their life together. She was awarded the CBE in 1999.
