Summary Article: Booth, Margaret (1898 Los Angeles, CA) from Encyclopedic Dictionary of Women in Early American Films: 1895-1930, An

Margaret Booth entered show business as a “patcher,” or the person who spliced film together, for D. W. Griffith right after graduating from Los Angeles High School. She soon moved to Paramount where she assembled tinted sections of film prior to their theatrical release.

She was made first assistant to director John Stahl, where she worked with editing and script continuity. She was finally made editor in 1921 and after working with Irving Thalberg was considered one of the best “cutters” at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). She eventually rose to the position of editor in chief at MGM and worked as supervising editor for more than thirty years (1937-1968).

She received an Oscar nomination for her editing of Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) and edited the film, The Boy Ten Feet Tall, which won at the Cannes Film Festival in 1963. After her retirement from MGM, she continued to edit on a freelance basis.

In 1977 she received a Lifetime Achievement award from the American Cinema Editors (ACE) for her contribution to the field of film editing.
